The challenges to better health care in the Mississippi Delta are complex, historical, diverse, and geographical. No one program can address every challenge. It takes multiple programs, working together and adquately funded, to trigger change. Standing alone, each program can only do a limited amount of good. But connected as part of an overall strategy, much like the pieces of a puzzle, the challenges to better health care in the Mississippi Delta are complex, historical, diverse, and geographical. No one program can address every challenge. It takes multiple programs, working together and adquately funded, to trigger change. Standing alone, each program can only do a limited amount of good. But connected as part of an overall strategy, much like the pieces of a puzzle, the benefi ts of each program are multiplied and strengthened. To meet these public policy challenges, Delta Health Alliance focuses its resources on increasing access to health care and educating individuals about living healthier.

Delta Health Alliance is helping Delta residents enjoy the healthy pleasures of gardening. In an effort to increase the production and consumption of healthy foods, our 21st Century Community Gardens project is creating a network of gardens all over the Delta. The Community Gardens project works with local healthcare organizations, civic entities, municipalities, schools, churches, and clinics to provide access to gardens within many Delta communities. The results are exciting – people are growing and eating fresh fruits and vegetables, enjoying the psychological benefits of nature, and learning an important skill and trade.

Working uninsured have a low-cost option for their primary care. Through partnerships with local clinics in four counties (Humphreys, Leflore, Sunflower, and Washington), Delta Health Alliance is providing affordable primary care for workers and small businesses in a patient-centered medical home setting through DHA’s 21st Century Primary Care Model for Chronic Disease project.

A Delta Health Alliance/Delta State University partnership is working to increase the number of nurses in the Delta. Funding from Delta Health Alliance has provided scholarships, faculty positions, and cutting-edge training equipment to DSU’s Robert E. Smith School of Nursing. The results are impressive: more students are enrolling in the nursing program and more highly trained nurses are entering the profession. Delt a Health Alliance proudly congratulates the 2011 class.

Welcome to this Report from the Field, a periodic publication we use to highlight some of the 49 programs we sponsor, along with their partners and constituents.
